Sailboat with bonus Sea Star #4

It has been a while since I have made one of these sailboats, in the past I have made a few of these sailboats, along with their accompanying sea stars, and this is yet another of those decorative art pieces. My previous sailboats in blue, green and orange can be seen here, here and here. This red/maroon coloured sailboat and sea star, or starfish, was yet another sailboat and sea star set I made as a gift.

I used the same pattern for this sailboat and sea star as I did for the previous three sailboats and stars I made. I also used all the same materials here as I did for the previous three sailboats and sea stars, with the exception of using a maroon colour material to highlight this set. I also used wooden skewers for the mast and boom, as I did with the previous sailboats I made. The full standing size of this sailboat is somewhere around 12 inches. It makes a cute and unique display piece, along with its matching sea star, and a lovely little gift set for someone who has an affinity for boat, sailing or just the ocean in general. And although made as a display piece, I happen to know these sailboats have experienced some playtime by little hands and have still held up, without getting too worn, which is good to know.

This new sailboat was made in the exact same way as my first two, seen here and here, with only the colours of the sails and sea star being altered. Originally made as more of a decorative piece, I happen to know that these boats and their little sea star or starfish have enjoyed some playtime, and have thankfully not been marred much by the experience.

To create these boats I used two skewers to form the mast and boom. A sturdy white and orange material, doubled, and sewn to the skewers was used to make the sails and the small flag. Lastly a thick grey/brown material was used to make the body of the boat, which was then stuffed until it could support itself to stand upright. The sea star's top side was made with the same patterned material as the previous two, only this one has an orange backing to match this boat.

At its full height these boats measure about 12 inches or so, and with the accompanying sea star make a sweet little gift set. It wasn't easy first putting these boats together, the pattern was a free one found with a google search and had no instructions. I had to figure out how I was going to attach the sails to the boat and eventually decided to use skewers, which I think worked out very well. Overall is has been a fun project to put together and I'm quite pleased with the results.

It has been a while since I have posted about my sailboats, the first can be seen here. This is yet another gifted make, and as with the first was intended as more of an ornamental decorative piece but if it got played with some then that's good too. It's always nice to know my gifted makes are being enjoyed. This green version also has its matching sea star or starfish, just as I made for my first blue sailboat.

This sailboat and sea star was made in exactly the same way as my first, only with green materials instead of the blues. I again used two skewers, measured and cut, to create the mast and boom and stitched the sails onto these. The sails and and small flag are made from two pieces of material sewn together, turned inside out, ladder stitched shut, then ironed so as too be strong and sturdy. The body of the boat, along with the sea star, is stitched together, turned then stuffed before being ladder stitched closed, with the boat being stitched closed around the mast.

I used the same pattern to make this sailboat as I used to make my first and found it easier the second time around as I now had an idea of how to make this. The first time I made this there were no instructions with this pattern and I had to figure out for myself what materials to use, such as the skewers for the mast, and how to make it work. The full standing size of this sailboat is somewhere around 12 inches and along with its sea star is makes a lovely gift set.

This sailboat is something different to the usual plush style toys I make. Originally made as more of a decorative piece, I do know it was played with a bit, which is nice as I know that it was enjoyed by its new owner. The sailboat is accompanied by its own sea star, or starfish as it may more widely be known, but as it is not actually a fish I prefer to call it a sea star, plus it just sounds more whimsical being called stars of the sea then simply starfish, at least it does to me.

For the sails and small flag I sewed two pieces of material together, turned inside out, ladder stitched shut, then ironed to create neat but strong and sturdy triangle pieces. The body of the boat, as with the sea star, is stitched together, turned then stuffed before being ladder stitched closed, with the boat being stitched closed around the mast, other wise known as a skewer. I used two skewers to create the mast and boom for the sails, those triangle pieces, to be stitched too.

This sailboat and sea star were made from a pattern found using a simple google search, and as with almost all of these google found patterns there were no instructions. Therefore I was left to figure out what to use for the mast and boom, as well as how to assemble this sailboat, all on my own. The sailboat at its full size is somewhere around 12 inches I think, but I can't be accurate about this as I gave this away before I thought to measure it.
